Sanitation and water for all
In April 2010, policymakers from over 30 countries met at the first ever High Level Meeting on Sanitation and Water to develop plans to address the global water and sanitation crisis.
WaterAid played a key role in the development of a global partnership called Sanitation and Water for All, which was launched at the meeting.
The new partnership aims to accelerate efforts to bring clean water and safe sanitation to the world’s poorest countries. It convenes national governments, donors and other development partners to address gaps in policy, planning, financing, and technical assistance that have slowed progress in achieving universal and sustainable access to sanitation and drinking water.
At the High Level Meeting, policymakers from around the world agreed to several joint actions, including:
- Promoting specific budget lines for water and sanitation
- Strengthening national level and global level monitoring of the water and sanitation sector
- Developing national level planning frameworks so that one clear national plan is in place for the water and sanitation sector in each country
- Harmonizing donor resources with recipient country processes
- Mobilizing resources to support national plans for water and sanitation
- Improving targeting of resources to the countries and people most in need
WaterAid served on the steering committee that helped to develop the Sanitation and Water for All partnership and advocated with donor and national governments to participate in it.
WaterAid continues to work with the US Government to fulfill the commitments made at the High Level Meeting.
