Pfizer

Through the Global Health Fellows program, Pfizer loans its most valuable asset, its people, to non-profit organizations such as WaterAid in the developing world to help address systemic health care challenges.

Fellowship assignments are designed by NGO partners according to their needs, and Pfizer funds the Fellows' transportation, lodging and other expenses while maintaining their positions within the company.

Following a rigorous application process, Global Health Fellows are selected for their strengths in teaching and training, their desire to make a difference to the world’s neediest people and their willingness to see their work carried on by local teams.

Pfizer’s ultimate goal in launching the program is to secure sustainable development, so Fellows are selected in part for their strengths in teaching and training and their willingness to see their work carried on by local teams. As such, WaterAid’s country programs are natural partners for hosting Pfizer’s Global Health Fellows.

Hank McKinnell, chairman and chief executive officer of Pfizer said: “The Pfizer Global Health Fellows program represents an innovative collaboration between NGOs and the private sector to significantly improve the lives of people around the world in a sustainable way.”

Linda Schlachter, a Pfizer Global Health Fellow who undertook a placement helping WaterAid develop sanitation solutions in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania said: “I wish that more people knew of the terrible environment in which some people are living because of the lack of a sewage system. I’ve been deeply touched by the many people here that really do want a better living situation ... and I know that maybe, just maybe, I helped things move in the right direction.”

Since we began working with Pfizer in 2005, WaterAid has hosted eight Fellows in five countries: Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria and Mozambique with specialties in Marketing, Human Resources, Information Technology and Advocacy and Learning.
