Nature’s Gate marks 40th anniversary with a special donation to WaterAid

Forty years ago, using nature as their inspiration and guide, Nature's Gate's founding brothers Leo and Vladimir hand collected rainwater then blended it with natural herbs from their herb shop, and created the very first Nature's Gate Rainwater Shampoo. They started giving it away to their friends and customers that came into the herb shop and soon it became a phenomenon all along Venice Beach.

In recognition of this heritage and the desire to give back, since March 2008 Nature's Gate has partnered with WaterAid to help communities, families and children in developing countries obtain sustainable access to safe, clean water.

Through this partnership, Nature's Gate helps to supply water to the world's neediest populations using simple, low-cost technologies such as rainwater harvesting.

“Water played an integral part in the birth of the brand, which was inspired by a torrential rainstorm, and we wanted to give back and pay tribute to our heritage and our founders. WaterAid was the perfect fit for us,” said Jennifer Schweitzer, brand manager for Nature’s Gate.

“We look to do several things through our partnership: give back, educate consumers and help to conserve water, a limited resource for all,” she added.

Falling rain can provide some of the cleanest naturally occurring water that is available anywhere. WaterAid helps communities to set up practical, cost effective systems that collect rainwater from surfaces such as the roofs of buildings. The water is filtered before being stored ready for use.

Rainwater is a renewable resource and its exploitation does not cause any harm to the environment, nor to future sources of water. Another benefit of rainwater harvesting is that it empowers the community to manage their own water supplies.

WaterAid has used rainwater harvesting successfully across Africa and Asia, including in various initiatives in Uganda. Working with its local partner Community Integrated Development Initiatives (CIDI), WaterAid helped St. Bernadette’s School to install a rainwater harvesting tank.

The technique was ideal for the school as the stored water is safe from contamination and can be used all year round. Students now have ready access to a supply of safe, clean water, which means they spend less time collecting water and more time studying. Globally, 443 million school days are lost annually due to water-related diseases.

“Our partnerships have to have meaning behind them and this one certainly does. Our philosophy is to have a positive effect on the world we live in by offering natural and sustainable health and beauty products that are linked to important issues,” Ms. Schweitzer said.

Nature’s Gate promotes the partnership in a variety of ways including celebrating its 40th anniversary with a special donation to WaterAid.
